Switched Multimegabit Data Service provides BTC customers with 10Mbps of bandwidth. The most common use of this service is connecting two Local Area Networks (LAN) together. This service is sold in Mbps increments. SMDS is sold per side. Therefore, if a customer wants to purchase a point-to-point circuit, they will be required to purchase two units. If they want to purchase 10Mbps to a carrier, they will be required to purchase a single 10Mbps circuit.

Applications

SMDS service is well suited for those applications requiring high capacity throughput connecting geographically dispersed locations. Examples are:

• Engineering and construction firms utilizing large CAD files
• Healthcare facilities sharing high resolution medical images for remote diagnosis
• Educational facilities (K-12 and universities) supporting file sharing, distance learning and administrative applications
• Enterprise interconnecting LANs at multiple locations
• Entertainment industry including video, cinematography and advertising
• High speed Internet access
